BARKER

Description

Another dance theatre piece for the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS – and once more a scenario that comes with a humorous alienation effect. BARKER aims at an audience of all generations – with a fairytale-like narrative style, magic tricks, puppets and plenty of interaction with the audience. BARKER is set in the 1920s, not long after the Russian Revolution and in a social climate marked by Red Scare paranoia. Inspired by the wild plots of vaudeville theatre, the work of Jewish author and illustrator Bruno Schulz (The Cinnamon Shops) and Jean Genet's The Maids, the piece tells a story of disobedience: six servants rebel against their masters – who are always invisible to the audience. Mind you, Barak Marshall is not staging a gloomy social drama, but a humorously exaggerated, hopeful journey to freedom, accompanied by the lively music of the Balkans.
